Have you ever imagined a paradise hidden halfway to the clouds? True to its name, "Xiaobantian" (Small Half-Heaven) is a sanctuary where nature meets sustainability. Leave the noise behind and breathe with the bamboo, the tea, and the soul of the land.
(The Origin of Xiaobantian)
The name "Xiaobantian" carries a poetic legacy, whispering stories of a bygone era. Comprising the villages of Zhulin, Heye, and Zhufeng, this region holds a history dating back to 1682. When the first ancestors arrived from Fujian and looked up from the Dongpurui valley, they saw a mountain peak perpetually veiled in mist, as if suspended halfway to the heavens. Thus, they named this place "Xiaobantian" (Small Half-Heaven).
(Must-See Highlights)
This is more than a trail; it is a story of rebirth. During the Japanese colonial era, the Changyuan Canal was hand-carved to channel water, serving as the lifeline for local settlers. Though nearly lost to time, modern eco-restoration has beautifully reclaimed this path for nature. Walking along the gentle stream, you’ll be enveloped by a lush sea of Moso bamboo, reminiscent of the cinematic landscapes in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. If you tread quietly, you might even have a rare, enchanting encounter with the elusive Mikado Pheasant—a true treasure of Taiwan’s wild forests.
Located right in front of the Xiaobantian Tourist Center, Shima Park tells an incredible story of community vision and renewal. Decades ago, this site held over a thousand tombs. Driven by a desire to transform their home into a sustainable destination, the local community spent over two years working tirelessly to coordinate the relocation of the graves and redesign the landscape. Today, the site has been completely reborn into a vibrant, lush sanctuary with elegant stones and flourishing trees.
The park is deeply rooted in the legend of "The Stone Horse and the Bamboo." It is said that early settlers abandoned their bamboo planting efforts, unknowingly leaving behind a single bamboo rhizome under a large rock. It sprouted the following year, eventually giving rise to the vast, breathtaking Moso bamboo sea we see today. In spring, the soft pink Hejin Cherries bloom against this legendary backdrop—a perfect symbol of the land's enduring resilience.
Hidden deep within the mountains, the 50-meter-tall Dexing Waterfall is your ultimate summer retreat. Carved by time into unique, pot-hole-shaped basins, this two-tiered wonder offers a spectacle of power and grace. Follow the connecting trail to feel the refreshing mist rich in negative ions—nature’s very own air conditioner. Stand here, breathe deep, and let the symphony of the falls wash away the world outside.
